In the past two years SMSA athletics has been cut short roughly $150,000 (H. Schmidt, Personal communication, Oct 29, 2021) and this has been evident while I’ve been completing my capstone. I had realized that the school uses the extra funds from things like team shirts, dress downs, and concession stands to just get by and run these programs, not for extra funds. This motivated me to expand beyond just getting parents involved like I did with the football pasta dinners but raise funds myself for these programs and have it directly impact them. I did that by selling SMSA basketball fan shirts and having it go directly to the SMSA basketball team. After COVID and a missing football season, parent participation in athletics was minimal. I began my Capstone by trying to bring back parent involvement through restarting the weekly pasta dinners. When I switched it over to basketball, my goal was more to involve the students and staff with the basketball program rather than the parents. I did that by creating and sending out SMSA fan shirts that’ll help get students and staff involved.
